Manufacturing and Processing Plants

Food Manufacturing and Processing Plants

During the long soy sauce fermentation process, the soy sauce must be stored in large tanks. Although such conventional materials as lining iron and fiber-reinforced plastic may be used for these tanks, the expenses for maintenance and control may be high. Stainless steel is now being used to decrease maintenance and control costs. Moromi, the soy sauce product in the fermentation stage, contains a high concentration of salt, which can cause common stainless steels to pit, corrode and undergo stress corrosion cracking. Our super stainless steels provide powerful corrosion resistance to protect against such harsh corrosive environments.

Rice Cooking Wine and Mirin Tanks

Conventionally, beer and wine fermentation tanks have used common stainless steel as they do not contain salt and the tanks are kept at a relatively low temperature. For flavorings such as sake and mirin that have a high concentration of salt or organic acids, stainless steel does not hold up in the fermentation process due to the low pH level and high temperatures. For corrosion resistance and the ability to withstand such harsh environments, our super stainless steel products are a great choice and provide a long life in food processing plants.

Chemical Manufacturing

In factories producing chemicals and pharmaceuticals, there are many substances involved that cause corrosion in metals. For example, halogen causes corrosion such as pitting, crevices and stress corrosion cracking, while acids cause overall metal corrosion. Our super stainless steels provide superior protection from such corrosion and are ideal for use in equipment that produces such products.

Salt Manufacturing Plants

The manufacture of salt involves heating and concentrating seawater, an environment that is hot and salt-intensive. Super stainless steels are the first products available to replace Hastelloy® alloys and titanium, a great improvement as well over general stainless steel in food equipment.

Polycarbonates

Polycarbonates are in great demand these days as a superior form of plastic. Polycarbonates are used in food containers where environmental hormones are not acceptable such as bento boxes and milk bottles as well as in plastics for cars, storage media such as CDs and laser disks, innovative camera cases and other products. Nippon Yakin's super stainless steels and duplex stainless steels are used to improve portions of polycarbonate production equipment susceptible to corrosion due to the chlorine ions used in the manufacturing process.

Caustic Soda Production

Caustic soda or sodium hydroxide is a substance that is indispensible to the chemical industry. Although there are a number of methods for producing caustic soda, a technique using an ion exchange membrane is effective while being environmentally friendly. In this method, two cells filled with an aqueous solution are separated with a positive ion exchange membrane, and a voltage is applied to create caustic soda at the negative electrode. Our product NAS Ni201 is pure nickel and an excellent choice for such negative electrodes.

Seawater Desalination

On average, seawater contains 3.5 percent sodium chloride, a concentration that can cause localized corrosion such as crevices in the equipment that handles seawater. Desalination plants for converting seawater to fresh water are commonly installed in countries with little rainfall, and equipment with a long life, little maintenance and reliability is important. Our super stainless steels and duplex stainless steels are used in such desalination equipment to provide powerful protection in saltwater environments.
